It is a current hot topic in Indonesia and Australia. Many people in other countries follow the issue as they may consider that this spying revelation might change the relationship between the Private Act application and intelligent activity among countries.
I have read a lot of related articles regarding the Australian’s wiretapping on the top-level officers and the first lady of Indonesia in 2009. I have read people’s opinions such as the Indonesian government’s decision to make this spying issue becomes a public issue is because the Indonesian government wants to satisfy its people, or Indonesia has lost her face in terms of low security and technology systems. Another interesting opinion suggests that the Australian government has overexercised Indonesian government regarding people smuggling to Australia.
I think none of those opinions can clearly explain the reason why Indonesians are upset. As an Indonesian, let me give you an alternative explanation.
Under president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, freedom of speech has been being encouraged. Indonesians are not afraid of voicing their opinion on social media. Indonesians start to understand that their corruption culture has deteriorated the welfare of Indonesia. They start to understand that the Indonesian laws need to be amended and the law applications need to be corrected. Their understanding of the Private act has taken a further step. In other words, most Indonesians are trying to respect the laws and are willing to comply with the related laws. They are trying to be more ethical.
I must admit that it will not be as easy as turning a page for Indonesians to change. However, the key point here is that their understanding of the Private Act and being ethical has been improving. Take the era of global information changing into account; their approach towards open information and spying issues may have changed too. As some people said “this not a cold war era” so why should an intelligent activity be conducted in an old fashion?
My point of view is that Indonesians are changing. Thus, it is recommended to other countries to change the way they treat Indonesia.
